FWPCOT2254 – This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a hand-held chainsaw and maintain it in working condition. This unit applies to cross-cutting fallen timber using safe cutting techniques. The unit applies to individuals who apply low risk work procedures and comply with worksite health and safety requirements when operating hand-held chainsaws to carry out routine work. No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

FWPCOT2273 – This unit describes the outcomes required to trim and cut felled trees with a chainsaw and to complete operator maintenance. It applies to situations where the production of timber is not the primary focus of the activity. The unit applies to a forestry worker, chainsaw operator, forest harvester, harvesting technician and arboriculture worker. Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states & territories at the time of publication and may differ according to jurisdiction.

This course is suitable for persons currently employed in industry with a requirement to obtain a Statement of Attainment that covers basic chainsaw maintenance and trimming and cutting felled trees. Students are assumed to have pre-existing knowledge in maintaining and operating chainsaws. Generally, learners will have also operated a chainsaw in the past. Students will also typically have completed their workplace orientation and induction training and be familiar with foundation concepts relating to work health and safety including identifying hazards in the workplace, using PPE, and completing safe work method statements. If an individual does not meet these requirements they may be deemed ineligible for short course delivery. While there are no pre-requisites for this course, you will need to have sufficient English language skills to complete the competency-based chainsaw training.

You will also be required to undertake practical training and assessments which will entail starting a chainsaw, holding, and cutting with a chainsaw.

All participants must be aged 16 years or above on the day of the course.

ALL ATTENDEES ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR WORK-APPROPRIATE CLOTHING AND STEEL-CAP BOOTS TO THE COURSE

 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and chainsaws may be brought along to training. For those who do not own this equipment, or do not wish to bring their own, PPE items and chainsaws will be supplied.

Courses cover outcomes required to carry out maintenance & operation of hand-held chainsaws and to cut & trim felled trees using a chainsaw. Topics such as (but not limited to), participating in planning & preparing for maintenance, conducting chainsaw maintenance, chainsaw maintenance records, preparing for trimming & cutting, visually assessing felled trees, planning for & conducting trimming & cutting are all covered within the course.

Successful participants will receive a ‘Statement of Attainment’ with the ‘Units of Competency’ listed above, issued by Health Security Education, that can be used to meet legislative, regulatory and workplace requirements in their relevant fields of employment.

A variety of assessment methods are utilised to ensure you develop the required skills and knowledge and to keep the course a practical, hands-on-learning experience. These methods are:

• Practical Assessments delivered under workplace conditions

All assessments are carried out in English.

You must be physically capable of starting, holding and using a chainsaw for sustained periods of time in the practical component of the course.
