This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to assess and manually fell small trees with a low level of complexity and to complete operator maintenance.

Basic trees typical to the scope of this unit may include the following characteristics:

• lean and distribution of the crown weight does not create a complex situation to assess or fell
• small dimensions relative to local forest size distribution
• no excessive lean
• no visible damage or defect
• species that are not prone to free splitting and adverse reactions during felling
• single stem or non-complex multi-stems
• diameter of tree is less than chainsaw bar length
• grown on terrain and slope that does not add significant complexity to the operation

The unit applies to those in a forest, agricultural, local council, emergencies services and other government agency environment. It is not relevant to commercial harvesting operations (except for minor forest produce).

Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states & territories at the time of publication and may differ according to jurisdiction.

This course is suitable for persons currently employed in industry with a requirement to obtain a Statement of Attainment that covers basic chainsaw maintenance and trimming and cutting felled trees. Students are assumed to have pre-existing knowledge in maintaining and operating chainsaws. Generally, Students will have also operated a chainsaw in the past. Students will also typically have completed their workplace orientation and induction training and be familiar with foundation concepts relating to work health and safety including identifying hazards in the workplace, using PPE, and completing safe work method statements. If an individual does not meet these requirements they may be deemed ineligible for short course delivery.

While there are no pre-requisites for this course, you will need to have sufficient English language skills to complete the competency-based chainsaw training.

You will also be required to undertake practical training and assessments which will entail starting a chainsaw, holding, and cutting with a chainsaw.

All participants must be aged 16 years or above on the day of the course.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and chainsaws may be brought along to training. For those who do not own this equipment, or do not wish to bring their own, PPE items and chainsaws will be supplied.

Successful participants will receive a ‘Statement of Attainment’ with the ‘Units of Competency’ listed above, issued by Health Security Education, that can be used to meet legislative, regulatory and workplace requirements in their relevant fields of employment.

This course will be delivered firstly in a classroom environment to cover the theory aspects and then move to an outdoor area for completion of the practical components.

The hours are generally 8:00am to 5:00pm, but students should refer to their specific course listing on the homepage of the Duff Consulting website for specific times and venues as this can sometimes differ to meet client needs.

There are no pre-course study requirements to complete this course and all resources required on the day will be supplied.

A variety of assessment methods are utilised to ensure you develop the required skills and knowledge and to keep the course a practical, hands-on-learning experience. These methods are:

• Theory Questions
• Practical Assessments delivered under workplace conditions

All assessments are carried out in English.

You must be physically capable of starting, holding and using a chainsaw for sustained periods of time in the practical component of the course.

If you are unhappy about any assessment result then seeking a re-assessment is usually the first strategy. If you are still unhappy about the assessment process or result then the Complaints and Appeals Process may be invoked.
